How to Remove Coffee from Carpet

Coffee spots can be tricky to remove, particularly when cream and/or sugar has been added. Many instant and decaffeinated coffees add dye to increase a look of richness, which makes removal from carpeting a bit more problematic.

Follow the methods below to tackle this difficult combination spot.

Directions:

Solution #1: Matrix Coffee Stain Remover

  1. Clean the area normally.
  2. Pre-test carpet for colorfastness in an inconspicuous area.
  3. Apply Matrix Spot Out undiluted to spot. Tamp and blot with a nylon spotting brush and clean white spotting towel.
  4. Apply Matrix Coffee Stain Remover undiluted using a chemical-resistant sprayer fitted with a coarse spray nozzle or moisten the area using a clean white spotting towel. Allow to dry completely. Make a second application if necessary. (Each must be done on thoroughly dry carpet.) Note: Do not apply to wool or natural fibers.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with cold water once the stain has been removed.
  6. Blot excess moisture with a clean white towel.

Solution #2: Matrix Advanced Stain Remover (ASR)

  1. Clean the area normally.
  2. In a clear container, mix equal parts Matrix Advanced Stain Remover solution A and solution B.
  3. Apply mixture to stained area, evenly wetting the discolored fibers (a trigger sprayer works well for this application or the Matrix Dual Chamber Sprayer). Note: Do not apply to wool or natural fibers.
  4. Allow product to dwell on the stain. The stain may disappear immediately, or it may require up to 8 hours for the chemical reaction to reach completion, depending on the severity of the stain.
  5. Rinse the area with hot water extraction.

Warning: Always test materials for colorfastness, follow label directions, and never mix products unless specified in the label directions. Each situation reacts differently and results may vary.
