Quarry Tile Care

Quarry tile is a tile with a square or diamond shape. It is a hard-wearing unglazed tile used for flooring. It can be thought of as a clay-baked tile. Typically, quarry tile is dull in color.

Quarry and ceramic tiles wear well because they are extremely hard and nonporous. Many quarry floor tiles are unglazed, giving them a rather flat color with little or no sheen. Sealing these floors can bring out the color and protect the porous cement grout. This will keep stains and the harmful effects of cleaning chemicals from damaging the tile. Sealed quarry tiles clean easier than unsealed floors, too.

When choosing a sealer, we recommend water-based sealers, as they are easier to apply, fast drying, and low odor.

Note: Glazed quarry tile has a smooth surface to which sealer will not easily adhere. Most times, sealing the grout is all that is required.

  • To clean: Apply Unitex Daily Clean diluted at 2 oz per gallon of water with a mop. Other surface situations, such as heavy grease or soap scum, may require a stronger cleaning solution. Contact your Jon-Don representative for specific recommendations.
  • To strip a pre-existing sealer: Apply Unitex Sledgehammer diluted at 24 oz per gallon of water. Apply with a mop, scrub, and pick up with a wet/dry vacuum. Rinse until no more residue remains.
  • To seal: Apply undiluted Betco Sure Cure, Unitex Reflection, or appropriate StoneTech sealer with a microfiber mop. Follow label instructions, applying coats of product until desired look is achieved.

Warning: Always test material for colorfastness, follow label directions, and never mix product unless specified in the label directions. Each situation reacts differently and results may vary.
