Sanitization Procedures for Carpet Cleaners

The following information is intended as a helpful guide The informationbelow should not replace guidelines established by the CDC, EPA, or OSHA.

A NEW MEANING OF "CLEAN"...

With America reopening for business, you’re getting back to work! And with the pandemic shining a new light on the meaning of “clean,” you’re going to be asked to do more to ensure the health and safety of your clients and/or their customers. The experts at Jon-Don have put together these recommended guidelines to help professional cleaners update their procedures in order to offer disinfection/sanitization services to their clients.

GUIDELINES FOR DISINFECTANT/SANITIZER APPLICATION

It is important to communicate that you are only providing cleaning and treatment application services. Do not make kill claims.

An acceptable phrase is “We will apply a sanitizer/disinfectant as per label instructions.” Or, if you are using a product on the EPA List N: Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2, you can state, “We will apply a disinfectant that meets the EPA’s criteria for use against SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19.”

That’s all you can and should say. You are not providing testing to verify kill, nor can you control reinfection of the area after you leave. So do not make kill claims and only state the service you’re providing and product you will be using.

 

  1. Read the entire product label of each cleaning agent and disinfectant prior to use. Make sure you are mixing and applying the product exactly as the label states.
  2. Use a dedicated and clearly labeled applicator that is only used with the same sanitizer or disinfectant. 
  3. Keep copies of all Safety Data Sheets (SDS) in your vehicles for each cleaning agent, sanitizer, and disinfectant you use.
  4. Clean all equipment and tools used on a job and apply an EPA List N Disinfectant before placing items back into your vehicle. Be sure to follow all label directions for use.
  5. After the last job of each day, wipe down all touch surfaces and equipment in each vehicle with a surfactant cleaner. Apply an EPA List N Disinfectant per label instructions.

GUIDELINES FOR PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

  1. Make sure to provide all necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required by the label, OSHA, and as recommended by the CDC.
  2. Provide disposable face masks for all employees. We recommend keeping a supply of masks in all vehicles employees will use.

    Note: If you go beyond a surgical mask to an N95, full or half-face respirators, these do fall under OSHA compliance rules. Employees will need to be tested for fit, safety, and health when using these types of respirators.

  3. Place a box of disposable gloves in all vehicles so employees can change gloves between jobs. A no-touch paperless transaction is best, but if that is not an option, have employees change gloves in front of the client before handling paperwork and accepting payment. (A helpful thing you can do to build a positive relationship with your customer is to teach them how to properly remove gloves as well.)

TIPS FOR EMPLOYEE TRAINING AND COMMUNICATION

  1. You should create a training document instructing employees when and how to use PPE and keep a signed and dated copy in their personnel file. Make sure you are meeting

  2. Share the CDC guidelines with your employees on social distancing and good hygiene.
  3. If more than one cleaning tech is going to the job site, we suggest taking separate vehicles to maintain safe social distancing. 
  4. Make sure to supply enough CDC recommended hand sanitizer for employees to use throughout the day. Keep plenty of hand sanitizer in all vehicles employees will use.
