Upholstery Cleaning

In order to successfully clean upholstery fabrics without causing damage, shrinkage, fraying, or color bleeding, it is important to pay attention to the fabric cleaning code, which can be found on the tag or label (sometimes this is found on the couch or chair or it may be sewn on the inside of a cushion).

Upholstery Cleaning Codes:

  • Code “W” – Only water-based cleaning agents should be used.
  • Code “S” – Only mild, water-free solvent cleaning agents or dry cleaning products should be used. Caution: these types of cleaning compounds are flammable and should not be used near open flames.
  • Code “W-S” – Water-based or solvent-based cleaners may be used. Spot clean this fabric with a dry-cleaning solvent, mild detergent foam, or upholstery shampoo.
  • Code “X” – Vacuum only! Do not use any water-based or solvent-based cleaning agents, as they may cause shrinking, fading, or spotting. This fabric can only be cleaned by gentle vacuuming or brushing.

To successfully clean upholstery without over-wetting the fabric or causing colors to bleed, products and tools specifically designed to care for upholstery must be used. Jon-Don is the professional cleaner’s source for upholstery cleaning chemicals, hand tools, and accessories.

Training Opportunity: The Upholstery & Fabric Technician (UFT) training course is ideal for technicians who want to learn how to properly clean and care for upholstery and avoid the mistakes that others only find out through expensive trial and error. This course covers the methods, chemistry, and inspection procedures necessary to clean most upholstery fabrics. This course qualifies for IICRC certification and Continuing Education Credits.
